The perks of renting - Blogmas 18

I feel like there is an immense pressure to own a home, and because I haven't gone to uni, I think that pressures sped up a bit. So, whilst we are sort of saving to get a little shell of a house (all my boyfriend wants in life is build our own kichen) I thought I would share the perks of renting, and why we shouldn't let (old) people tell us we're throwing our money away.

1) You can leave.

This doesn't really apply to me as I have a dog that sort of binds me to the country, but say you really wanted to go travelling. Once your lease is up you can just fuck off, you have absolutely nothing to financially tie you here and you can dip in and out of short contracts if you wanted to!

2) Sometimes shit gets fixed for you.

Last year our washing machine died, and we were very lucky in that it wasn't ours, it was included with the flat, and thanks to having a decent landlord, we had a new one within a week. A couple of months ago we had an inspection and they pointed out a leaky tap, then got a plumber in for us. None of this cost us a penny and had we owned the property (Or the washing machine) it would have taken a chunk out of our savings to sort out.

3) You CAN still make it a home.

I think when a lot of people think of renting they think of how restricted you are with decor and it all becomes either very clinical and white, or you have a problem with that weird coloured wall the landlord obviously thought was a good idea. It's always worth asking permission to change things, usually it's fine as long as you're willing to pay of it and/or put it back the way it was when you left. If not, command hooks are great for putting up frames and mirrors and apparently temporary wallpaper is a thing? Who knew?

I just think we shouldn't be made to feel down about where we live.
