Let's talk animal testing - Blogmas 4

Apologies in advance for this being potentially the least festive post to ever be included in blogmas, this is a subject very important to me and one that I've wanted to talk about for a long time.

Festive product photo to make up for the depressing post.

Testing cosmetics and ingredients for cosmetics on animals was banned in the UK in 1998, which sounds like (/is) a great thing when said outright but it's lead many people (Hi Mum) to believe that every makeup product they bought from then on has been cruelty free.

What this means is that in many cases a brand just conducts it's testing in a country outside of the EU (EU Banned animal testing in 2013) or has the policy of no animal testing "unless required by law" which generally means they sell to China, where animal testing is mandatory.

Then there's the issue of parent companies. Dove has recently come out with massive amounts of promotion saying they are now 'leaping bunny approved' which is great, until you realise that they are owned by unilevier who own other brands such as Simple and St Ives, both of which are sold in China.

People's options vary on shopping from brands with testing parent companies but I tend to consider them a last resort if I really can't find a good alternative. (The only example I can think of here is deodorant- if you know a great one, let me know!)

I hope this post has made you feel a little bit more informed on the issue and will maybe cause you to think about switching up your makeup bag to more ethical brands.

Cruelty free kitty is a great website if you want to know where your favourite brand and any parent company stands on animal testing.
